Wildlife
For wildlife I had to choose only three animals so I am doing the mole, the snake and the bison (buffalo). I am going to talk about their adaptations, what they eat and what they do to survive during the seasons. Each animal has to adapt to its own environment in order to survive. Most of the animals in the temperate grasslands have to dig their homes because there are no trees, big bushes, and hardly any rocks.
Moles
A mole has to dig underground because there is no other place that they would be able to survive or protect themselves from predators. A mole has very strong shoulder muscles and paws to be able to dig fast. They also have soft fur so that they can slide through the tunnels easily. They have a venomous bite so that they can paralyze a worm in an instant and they have delicate snouts in order to locate their prey. They have poor eyesight, but it is not necessary for them as they live in the dark in underground tunnels. Moles eat worms, snakes, lizards, insects, spiders, slugs and snails. Their underground shelter provides heat in the winter and it is cold in the summer. If there is a fire, they won't get affected because the tunnel is so deep that they cannot feel the heat.
Burrowing Owl
Owls usually live in trees, but this type of owl does not. This owl can't dig so it uses other animals' abandoned homes as their home. Burrowing owls have brown feathers so that they can camouflage with the brown grass or soil. Burrowing owls have good vision and good hearing. The burrowing owl eats rodents, reptiles, small mammals such as moles, mice and grasshoppers, beetles and birds. Usually the burrows are the opposite temperature than outside, so if it is freezing for example then they can stay in their warm burrows. As opposed to the other owls which are nocturnal, this type is diurnal (it looks for food during day time).
Bison
For obvious reasons, bison can't go underground so they have had to adapt in other ways. Bison usually travel in herds. In winter they huddle together to keep warm and they usually keep the younger calves in the middle to protect them from the cold and from predators. Another adaptation is that they have two layers of fur. The first layer traps warm air next to their skin, while the second layer protects it from the water and the wind. Their diet is a combination of grasses, berries and lichens. Another adaptation is their digestive system which allows them to digest the grasses more easily.
